Dave Leduc banned from Myanmar and Lethwei for Muay Thai comments

The most famous name in the world of Lethwei, Dave Leduc, has been banned from Myanmar and competing in the sport for two years.

The Myanmar Traditional Lethwei Federation (MTLF) announced sanctions against Leduc for his recent behaviour. Leduc has been on a tirade against the sport of Muay Thai of late. He insulted a legend of Muay Thai, Buakaw Benchamek, even bringing up allegations of missing child support. He accused Thailand of stealing Lethwei from Myanmar and creating Muay Thai from it. In addition, Leduc challenged Buakaw to a fight under modified rules.

Dave Leduc has been banned from Myanmar for challenging Buakaw and incendiary comments about Muay Thai and Thailand.

There was a genuine risk of a diplomatic issue between the countries because of the actions and words of Leduc. Calling a martial artist’s reputation into question is usual in the West, but in the East it is unacceptable.

The MTLF decided Leduc acted outside the ethics of the sport and deserves punishment. The Canadian fighter cannot enter the country of Myanmar, fight in Lethwei competitions or be an ambassador for the sport.

This punishment will undoubtedly hurt Leduc, as a man who loved the country of Myanmar. He has spoken on the Joe Rogan Experience about his acceptance by the people of Myanmar and how much it means to him.
