Richard Schaefer has ‘one task’ for Jon Jones

Just days after Jon Jones acquired Richard Schaefer as his new advisor, the veteran promoter has stated his plans for the former light heavyweight champion.

Speaking to FightNation, Schafer states “There’s a big fight out there, the fight against Francis Ngannou. That’s the fight fans want to see. Not just UFC fans- fight fans period.”

Ngannou lands a devastating left hand on Stipe, a sequence which would ultimately see the heavyweight title change hands.

After Dana’s positive reception of Jones pairing with his new advisor, Schafer elaborated as he said “Dana and me have a great relationship. We respect each other. We will be meeting soon to see if we can structure a deal that everyone can live with… The best deals are usually those where nobody is really happy with (them) but everyone can live with them.”

A successful execution of the deal for Schafer would be pivotal in the roller-coaster process of getting the two UFC stars to step into the Octagon. Jones’ relationship with the UFC has played out in the public eye over the past year, with the former champion voicing his frustrations regarding compensation and treatment, even requesting a contract release.

Schafer has stated he believes a Jones Ngannou clash would be “The biggest UFC PPV event of all time”, pledging to “do whatever I can” to make the fight a reality.

The former light heavyweight king will hope to become a two-division champion.

Fans interest in the super-fight have peaked in the wake of Ngannou’s title-winning performance against Stipe Miocic. Back in March, we seen a much improved version of The Predator, showcasing impressive advancements in grappling exchanges and takedown defence. With Jones coming off the back of two razor-close decisions, the fight spawns many questions. Can Jon Jones avoid the nuclear power of Ngannou? Can Francis keep up the pace if the fight leaves the first two rounds? And perhaps most importantly, how will Jon adapt to his new weight?
