Paulo Costa withdraws, Cannonier to fight Gastelum
By
VM StaffAugust 21st has a new main event, and it’s set between two fan favourite middleweights. Out of action since his title loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 253, Paulo Costa will continue to be on side-lines this year. Originally, the Brazilian was set to fight ex-champ Robert Whittaker on April 17th, but withdrew.
Now, he has withdrawn once again from a main event against #3 ranked Jared Cannonier.
Much like he did in Costa’s place against Robert Whittaker, perennial contender and TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum will fill in to fight Cannonier. Both of these heavy hitters dropped their last contest to the aforementioned Whittaker, but still have high hopes for their title ambitions for 2022.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto announced the news last night, though it hasn’t been confirmed by the promotion.
