Daylight Robbery at PFL 5
By
VM StaffGleison Tibau managed to snatch a controversial decision victory over Rory MacDonald in the main event of PFL 5.
Social media users were quick to voice their opinions in the wake of the split decision, with many claiming the result as one of the “worst in MMA history”. MacDonald controlled the vast majority of the action, out-striking and out-grappling the Brazilian black-belt. MacDonald landed 81 total strikes throughout the five-round bout, with Tibau only connecting 31 times. Paired with the takedowns and cage control of the former UFC title-challenger, it’s clear to see why the PFL judging is being criticised as heavily as it is.
The video above shows Rory’s reaction to the scorecard announcement, and it’s safe to say the majority of us shared the same gesture.
MacDonald voiced his dissatisfaction in the post fight press conference, stating “I’m very disappointed. I believe and everyone I talked to, and everyone online, scored the fight for me. Even three rounds to zero, so I think it was a clear robbery.”
To credit Tibau, his toughness was on full display. Throughout the fight, he was willing to enter the pocket with MacDonald and exchange shots, none of which seemed to do substantial damage. His takedown defence shone in the second round. Despite being outstruck by a considerable margin, the Brazilian was able to shrug-off a number of MacDonald’s shots. After all, former UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov struggled to take Tibau to the mat, so it’s no secret that his ability to keep the fight standing is world class. Look at him, he’s a fire hydrant for god’s sake.
The result carries an aura of notoriety, and will no doubt be looked back on as one of the worst MMA decisions in recent years. Do you agree with the severity of the reaction towards the result? Let us know below!
