No. 3 Ranked Middleweight Jared Cannonier following UFC win: ‘I’m broke’
By
VM StaffJared Cannonier suffered a broken arm in his last fight opposite Robert Whittaker, he healed up and defeated Kelvin Gastelum by Unanimous Decision. This moved him to fighting the winner of Adesanya/Whittaker for the 185 pound belt, both men are waiting out the COVID-19 restrictions in New Zealand and Australia. Cannonier on the other hand, may have to take another fight by then as he is ‘broke’
Not long ago, Cheyenne Buys earned herself a Performance of the Night bonus by stopping her opponent. She threw shade at the UFC team for not paying enough:
‘I’ve been so broke my whole life because of this sport’
Sarah Alpar had to set up a GoFundMe to pay for her training and received a donation from former Disney star Jake Paul.
A fighters union was talked about and there was even one chaired by Donald Cerrone, Cain Velazquez, GSP, Tim Kennedy, and TJ Dillashaw in 2016 but it never got off the ground. Leslie Smith has also been an advocate for a fighters union and began work on Project Spearhead, which is still in the works but has not gained the desired traction either.
Now Jared Cannonier has spoke of money troubles in his post fight interview, when the company just made a ten year deal with Crypto.com to the tune of 175 million dollars.
What do you all think? Will the UFC continue to underpay fighters because they are contractors and not full blown employees? Will fighters set up a union?
