Sumo: Kyushu Tournament Day 4

I wasn’t able to write a full update of what happened at Day 3 of the Kyushu Tournament, but it’s back to business on Day 4 with some exciting matchups. The GOAT, Hakuho, has been at the tournament working security detail and hopefully he has nothing to do during the tournament! The lone Yokozuna, Terunofuji, has made a solid start so far despite some tough matches. Ozeki (2nd rank) Takakeisho and Sekiwake (3rd rank) Mitakeumi have also made it to day 4 without defeat. It isn’t going so well for Komusubi (4th rank) Kiribayama as he is yet to pick up his first win. Here is the top of the standings after day 3, with all the undefeated records so far.

As it stands

3-0 Terunofuji (Y)

3-0 Takakeisho (O)

3-0 Mitakeumi (S)

3-0 Chiyoshoma (M7)

3-0 Ura (M7)

3-0 Aoiyama (M9)

3-0 Hokotofuji (M12)

3-0 Abi (M15)

3-0 Sadanoumi (M16)

Day 4

Yokozuna Terunofuji extended his run to 4-0 against Onosho today in another hard-fought battle. Wrestlers are raising their game against the Mongolian champion but he is coming through all challenges so far. Ozeki Takakeisho who was once so close to the Yokozuna rank is continuing his resurgence as he also moves to 4-0.

Abi also marched on to 4-0 with another commanding victory. He is looking in supreme form and it doesn’t look like it will be long til we see him return to the top ranks of the division. A clash of two fan-favourites saw Ura take on the flying monkey Tobizaru. A quick match saw Tobizaru win via hikiotoshi.

Towards the lower end of the ranks, Sadanoumi and Hokutofuji are continuing their unbeaten form as both comfortably moved on to 4-0.

One of the highlights of the day saw one of the little guys Ishiura take a win against the much larger Kotonowaka. There were also wins for Ozeki Shodai (3-1) and Sekiwake Mitakeumi (4-0). Komusubi Kiribayama continued his poor start, moving to 0-4 after a defeat against Takanosho.
