UFC 292 | Ian Machado Garry’s next step to stardom

Ireland and MMA will always be synonymous with one another after the glorious rise to prominence of Conor McGrego. However, as the former double champ continues to gallivant around flaunting his whiskey, stout and inability to coach young fighters to victory against UFC veterans, the Irish faithful need somebody to carry the torch in the right way.

Step forward, Ian Machado Garry, who – this weekend – takes his rightful place on the UFC 292 main card in a welterweight match-up with seasoned pro Neil Magny. With twelve wins in his twelve professional fights in, Garry earnt himself a place in the UFC welterweight rankings by impressively finishing Daniel Rodriguez in the first round. Now sitting at #13, Garry has his eyes on a place at the top table of the division, and a win over #11 ranked Magny will put him right there.

‘The Future’ was supposed to face Geoff Neal, but his withdrawal on short notice has lead to Neil Magny stepping in, who brings with him a more complicated style for Garry to contend with. Geoff Neal would’ve stood and thrown with Garry, and it would be nice to see that match-up again down the line, but in his place, Magny will be coming to get Garry up against the fence and effectively shithouse his way to a decision victory. For Ian Machado Garry, stopping Magny’s game plan will be half of the job, the other half will be putting him to sleep.

We know that Garry has all the tools of a superstar on the feet, and outside of the Octagon for that matter, but this weekend will be a great opportunity for us to see how he answers the grappling questions posed by Magny. If he can answer them strongly, then we will truly know that Garry is the man to carry the Irish torch moving forward.

As for Garry’s claims that he’s the real superstar on the UFC 292 card… we’ll see if he can prove it.
