Cody Garbrandt: A Career Resurgence
By
VM StaffCody Garbrandt will look to add a pivotal win to his resume as he faces Rob Font on May 22nd in Las Vegas.
Following a spectacular finish against Raphael Assuncao last year, “No Love” has looked better than ever. Being hailed as “Garbrandt 2.0“, the former bantamweight champion continues his roller-coaster journey to retain gold.
Garbrandt endured a three fight skid after capturing gold from Dominick Cruz in late 2017. In two heated clashes with T.J Dillashaw, Garbrandt came up short, suffering TKO losses on both occasions. Following this, a brawl with Pedro Munhoz earned the pair a FOTN bonus, with the American once again adding a loss to his record.
With many criticising his lack of emotional control in the Octagon and self destructive-tendencies to indulge in a firefight, his previous bout showed a calculated, surgical approach.
“No Love” detailed his health struggles in a recent interview, reporting a torn bicep muscle and a prolonged battle with COVID-19. Garbrandt was scheduled to make a move to Flyweight, with a championship match-up with Flyweight king Deiveson Figueiredo targeted for November 2020. After being forced to withdraw from the bout due to these incidents, Garbrandt appears more positive than ever as we count the days to his return.
In a recent interview, he detailed his ambition to capture two-titles (bantamweight and flyweight). This outlines his confidence heading into his next clash, and what we can expect to see from the contender.
The 29-year-old is undoubtedly as dangerous as ever. As he enters the prime years of his career, a win against top contender Rob Font places him in line for a title shot. The bantamweight division has no shortage of world-class talents, and this weekend we will see yet another contender rise.
