Holly Holm calls for Miesha Tate rematch, wants to ‘make it right’

Holly Holm is ready for a return to the octagon and has her eyes set on one opponent in particular. A rematch with the woman who dethroned her back in 2016, Miesha Tate.

During their original contest, Holm put on a show for fans and was dominating the scorecards going into the fifth and final round. It was in the final round however that Tate would manage to take the champions back and force her to submit with a tight rear-naked choke.

This loss was the first in Holly Holm’s career and spelled the start of a three fight losing streak. Tate would retire from the sport a mere 8 months later after losing the title to Amanda Nunes and dropping a decision to Raquel Pennington.

A rematch between the two was long called for by fans, but with Tate’s retirement all hopes were seemingly crushed. That was until last week, where Tate defeated Marion Reneau via TKO at UFC Vegas 31.

With ”Cupcake” now back on the UFC roster, Holm thinks now is the perfect time to run the fight back.

”For me, I think the Miesha fight makes the most sense because that’s a loss that I want to avenge. Even in the fight, it wasn’t one of those fights I was getting dominated in. I was winning and doing very well up until the end of the fight, and it leaves kind of a sour taste in your mouth and I want to make it right. I know Miesha is always down for a challenge, so I’m not sure why we shouldn’t make the fight happen.”

The fight would definitely make sense in theory but whether the UFC matchmakers agree is yet to be seen. Despite calling for the fight, Holly Holm has ruled out sitting around and waiting for it to materialise and knows the women’s 135lb division is heating up and anything could happen.

”After Julianna got booked with Nunes we were just kind of thinking, ‘Who else is there?’ From what I understand they were waiting to see how a few fights were going to go. There’s the Miesha fight with Reneau, there was Aldana, who I just fought, and Yana, and this weekend there’s Aspen Ladd. Within like three weeks there’s six girls in my weight class. I think they’re waiting to see what happens there.”

”October is going to be a year (between fights). I don’t want to sit on the shelf just waiting. I want to make something happen.”

Would you like to see the Holm vs Tate II? Or do you think there are other fights to be made first?
