Sumo: Kyushu Tournament Day 7
By
VM StaffWe’re almost half way through the last Sumo tournament of the year already, as day 7 took place in Fukuoka, Japan. In the couple of days since the last article, most of the undefeated wrestlers have lost their 0s and only three remain. Yokozuna Terunofuji is one of them, alongside the resurgent Abi and Ozeki Takakeisho. Kiribayama broke his losing streak yesterday but Kotoeko is still languishing at the bottom on 0-6. After 2 days missing, Georgian wrestler Tochinoshin returned to action.
Here’s how it stands after day 6 (selected wrestlers).
Terunofuji (Y) 6-0
Takakeisho (O) 6-0
Abi (M15) 6-0
Mitakeumi (S) 5-1
Tamawashi (M6) 5-1
Ura (M7) 5-1
Day 7
The big Mongolian Yokozuna had a much easier ride on Day 7 as he easily swept aside Myogiryu with a stunning kotenage. He extends his run to 7-0, Myogiryu moves to 2-5.
Takakeisho also continued his great run, joining the Yokozuna on 7-0, but unfortunately for Abi, his run came to an end as he tasted defeat for the first time this tournament against Hokutofuji.
A day of pushing and pulling didn’t see too many spectacular finishes.
The man-mountain Ichinojo faced the skilled but small Wakatakakage and the smaller man bounced off the big Komosubi before being swiftly dispatched. Ichinojo moves to 3-4 and Wakatakakage to 2-5.
Chiyoshoma saw off Aoiyama with a nicely executed uwatenage after moving out of the way of the charging Bulgarian wrestler. Elsewhere, there were wins for Ozeki Shodai, Sekiwake Mitakeumi and fan-favourite Hoshoryu. See the full results from the day below.
