Stipe Miocic vs Jon Jones interim title fight in the works for UFC 276

The returns of two UFC legends is on the cards for International Fight Week as rumours of Stipe Miocic vs Jon Jones for the interim heavyweight title have surfaced.

Since his vacating of the 205lb title, the return of Jon Jones has been a mysterious presence that hangs in the thoughts of MMA fans. The former champion has teased a move to heavyweight, claiming that he is edging closer to ideal physical frame. It seems now, however, the UFC have made an offer to Jones about a return.

This information comes from news outlet MMAjunkie. An anonymous source close to the situation has reported that Jones was offered a fight with former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who has been inactive since March 2021. The plan is for the pair to square off at UFC 276 in July, during International Fight Week.

This report is corroborated by a recent interview from UFC president Dana White. Speaking with TMZ, he said, “I was just telling somebody the other day, our lineup for this summer is incredible. I’m hoping Jon Jones is going to be part of that lineup this summer […] Stipe [Miocic] makes sense.”

With reigning champion Francis Ngannou sidelined indefinitely due to a knee injury, the title picture is likely to involve an interim championship in the coming months. The allegedly offered fight to both Miocic and Jones would be for an interim title. Reports state that the promotion intends to crown an interim champion due to Ngannou’s layoff, with their ideal combatants being the aforementioned former champs.

No deal has been signed, as of the time of writing. Negotiation issues between the UFC and Jones have plagued industrial relations, so, this offer may well lead to nothing. The promotion, still, seems to remain optimistic that a deal will be made.
