ONE Fight Night 6 | Takeaways and full results

Just like that, another ONE Fight Night event in the books, as the Asian combat giants touched down at the impact arena in Bangkok for another night of limb throwing and body tossing action.

Granted, the card may have lost some matchups on the way, but it didn’t fail to deliver some of the magical moments we’ve come to expect when watching a ONE Fight Night event.

Below we take a look at three key takeaways from the event and recap the ONE Fight Night 6 results in full.

Tonon still has championship potential

Garry Tonon defeats Johnny Nunez via round 1 Kimura.

It may not have been a win against the ranked opponent we all wanted but Nunez is no pushover. Nunez style is almost tailor made for Tonon and the grappling ace capitalised perfectly, just like he always seems to do when he finds himself in any sort of positional advantage whether it be clinch or ground. A victory that doesn’t necessarily do much for his title argument but one that will certainly help his confidence after a vicious first round loss to former champ Thanh Le last time out.

It has to be said, Tonon is still relatively new to the sport of MMA and came into it with a grappling pedigree and virtually nothing else, the rest of his game is still being constructed around this. Once he properly refines his skillset and more importantly his defence on the feet, only really as a vehicle for his grappling, he certainly has every shot to take that championship belt.

Grappling is his realm and all he needs is half a chance down there, opportunities like that can forced should his understanding of the stand up realm be sufficient enough in the sense of positioning and taking guys down.

Aung La is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA right now

Aung La defeats Gilberto Galvao via round 1 TKO

“The Burmese Python” has now entered his 9th year with ONE and is still steamrolling opponents, while putting on exciting leather slinging displays to keep us all hovering above out seats.

Galvao really had nothing for Aung La on the night, throwing down with the man you don’t throw down with.

Exercising that famed granite chin while meeting the wrath of his cinderblock like hands, it only took La 10 seconds to put the Brazilian down with a stifling counter right hand, setting the tone for what would be a pretty one sided bout.

He’s one of the poster boys for ONE and we continue to see why, although he may have lost his belts, he still spawns non stop entertainment whenever a fight is even loosely in his control. Apart from Vitaly Bigdash and Reinier De Ridder, it seems everyone ONE are matching him up with are soon special guests in a highlight reel rife with vicious beat downs.

Although losing his belts in dominant fashion must have been tough, Aung La has been almost perfect ever since, he’s ticking off names and eventually, it will be pretty hard to deny him an opportunity to reclaim those gold straps once more.

Chingiz Allazov is the best in the world

Allazov defeats Superbon via round 2 TKO.

He cannot be denied anymore, the ‘Belarusian bulldozer’ executes a demolition job on kickboxing’s pound for pound king to claim the mantle for himself, ending one of the greatest runs in kickboxing history.

Going into this contest both guys had looked pretty unstoppable in their last few fights with Superbon claiming P4P #1 status after blitzing kickboxing great Giorgio Petrosyan with a head kick for the ages and pipping both Marat Grigorian and Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong to decision wins. The three best featherweights all beaten in one run.

Allazov demolished Samy Sana and Jo Nattawut before also taking down Sitthichai to compile a wonderful run of his own, en route to fight with the King of Kings. This man is scary, he didn’t just beat Superbon, he plastered him to the cage three times with those vicious hands, scoring 3 knockdowns to force a KO stoppage.

Superbon couldn’t seen to get into a rhythm, while Allazov remained active and unpredictable with the funky shot selection he often displays, exuding ferocity and aggression with his hard nosed pressure heavy style, built on the foundations of his mechanically destructive boxing combinations which seem to just make guys crumble. When momentum is accrued and he finds his flow, Allazov’s striking is absurdly overwhelming, not to mention the fact he has a notoriously good chin for back up.

With the display he just put on and the improvements to his game since the beginning of his ONE run, now reigning atop the division as king with a trigger happy style that seemingly can’t be matched, this could be a reign to remember. Allazov is certainly the biggest and baddest gunslinger in town, and this gunslinger is blasting everyone, whether you’re good bad or ugly.

Honorable mentions

While the night wasn’t packed full of blistering displays like that of Allazov’s, there were some incredible contests and performances worth mentioning.

Supergirl and Stamp Fairtex claimed fight of the night after an incredible back and fourth kickboxing battle, edged by Stamp who took the split decision. Supergirl did incredibly well, only 19 years old and took the fight on one days notice against an incredibly dangerous opponent, pushing Stamp to her limit in a hell of a firefight. An incredible contest despite Meksen not being able to compete. Both girls will be major players at Strawweight and I could certainly see them meeting at the top once more.

Rodtang was his same old self against the resilient Jiduo Yibu, firing on all cylinders with his famed relentless pressure heavy boxing style, munching at the Japanese man with his powerful arsenal throughout the contest, but failing to get the finish. Yibu was very impressive to go the distance, not only absorbing the relentless onslaught of Rodtang, but firing back with purpose to make for an entertaining contest.

Superlek managed to secure the Flyweight kickboxing title against tough late replacement Daniel Puertas, the Spaniard toughed it out with the Thai phenom for 5 rounds with many thinking he did enough to secure the victory, adopting a pressure heavily style that certainly appeared effective. Both men had their moments, particularly an incredible round 3 for Superlek which will have worked heavily in his favour.
