Jonathan Haggerty Unveils Plan For Three-Sport Glory in ONE Championship
By
VM StaffONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Jonathan “The General” Haggerty is in a league of his own.
The British star dethroned longtime king Nong-O Hama this past April, and he’s now on the brink of adding the vacant ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title to his collection.
To do that, though, “The General” must topple ONE Bantamweight World Champion Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade, who he will meet at ONE Fight Night 15 on Saturday, 7th October.
Haggerty’s accomplishments speak for themselves in ONE Championship. He’s the only Brit so far to gain gold in the world’s largest martial arts organization, and he’s held it on two separate occasions – having previously claimed the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title.
With bantamweight Muay Thai gold firmly over his shoulder, the Orpington native’s dream of becoming a two-sport World Champion is just one victory away, and he feels that, in his current form, the title-clinching moment is inevitable.
“I’ve said it in previous interviews, but I wanted the kickboxing belt on one shoulder and the Muay Thai belt on the other. I’ve said that throughout my career, and it will become a reality,” Haggerty asserted.
His opponent on 7th October will be no pushover, however. Before transitioning to mixed martial arts, Andrade was a striking superstar. He boasts an impressive 40-3 slate across Muay Thai and kickboxing, so he’s no stranger to getting the job on the feet.
While Andrade has reaped success in bantamweight MMA since then, Haggerty insists his Brazilian foe has been away from the purely striking arts for too long to hang with him in kickboxing.
“Fabricio’s been in MMA now for three-to-four years, so I feel like it’s going to be a bit difficult for him to change over to the kickboxing style. I’ve been on my feet all my life, so I’ve got the advantage,” Haggerty claimed.
“I feel like it’s going to be a good fight. A tough fight. We’re excited for it. He’s making the wrong decision coming over to my world, but we love a trier.”
Since earning his first taste of ONE gold in 2019, “The General’s” quest for accolades in the promotion has been insatiable.
Haggerty wasted no time establishing himself in the bantamweight realm after his move up from flyweight earlier this year. And if he scores a win against Andrade, he’s planning a run at becoming ONE’s first ever triple World Champion soon after.
“Once I win the kickboxing belt against him, I’m definitely going to be calling him out for his MMA belt,” he said.
“He feels that he can step over to our world, so after I take this kickboxing belt, I want to come for his MMA belt, for sure.”
